I only rated this four stars because of the changes i made. First off i seasoned the mixture with garlic powder and johnny's seasoning salt, and insted of using a whole can of cream of mushroom soup i only used half and threw in about half a cup of sour cream. Also used a bag of mixed veggies. (didnt have any green beans.)It was very good after that. My boyfriend really liked it, its also a great way to use up leftover mashed potatoes!

I didn't use cream of mushroom soup, and used ground turkey rather than beef. Also used onion powder (along with garlic and pepper) to season the meat. I flavored my mashed potatoes with hot curry powder-- YUM, that added a wonderful taste (and smell!) To moisten the mashed potatoes, I made them with the appropriate amount of water and milk, then added about 1/2 C chicken broth. This counteracts the need for any creamed-soup (+ makes it dairy free and cuts the calories.)

I've never made shepard's pie - so I was surprised when my husband came home and knew exactly what it was. I couldn't stop nibbling at it. I did a few different things.. not major... but I cooked the onion and added garlic with the ground beef. I added a little bit of seasoning...salt, pepper, a bit of this and that. In my mashed potatoes I mixed half of the cheese in them and added sour cream. I had almost 4 cups of mashed potatoes after the fact, so I threw it all on top of the complete meat mixture .... My husband had his working partner with him when he came home and asked him if he wanted "Shepard's pie." They finished almost half of the whole dinner. My 2 year old loved it... but my 3 1/2 yr old...who has gotten soo picky... didn't even try it because he didn't like the way it looked. Oh well...his loss... This seemed to be great comfort food from childhood for my husband. Thank you.

This was a great recipe, easy to make and easy to prepare. It was surprisingly tasty although a bit on the bland side which is part of the reason I rated it a 4. You may want to spice it up a bit. The other is the 'mashed potatoes is a bit vague; there are many possibilities for mashed potatoes. In my case I sued boiled three mid sized russet potatoes in a large saucepan with 1/2 tsp salt for 20 minutes (until tender), then blended with 4 tbsp half and half and 2 tbsp butter. I will definitely make this again.

Easy Easy Easy! This was an excellent recipe. I made it just as written; however, I did put a little garlic powder in the potatos. The next time I make it I will make about 3 to 4 cups of potatoes.
11/17/2011
I make a variation of this using low sodium soup and half a packet of onion soup mix. I use whatever veggies I have on hand. Sometime I add cheese, sometime not. As is, the recipe needs a little seasoning, but it's a good base for a hearty meal/

I never had shepherds pie with green beans before, always mixed veggies or peas and carrots, but I really liked this. The only thing I did different was saute the onions with the beef, and add extra cheddar to the potatoes. My husband did ask if I'd be insulted if he reached for the hot sauce, but I wasn't because he puts hot sauce on everything anyway! I'll definately make this again, for the simplicity of it.

I had no problems with this meal! Quick and easy-AND delicious. My Dad used to use tomato soup instead of mushroom, next time, I will substitute and see if it turns out as good as his. Thanks for sharing!

I wasn't sure if I'd like this but it turned out great and was very easy/inexpensive to make. I used 2 packages of Idahoan instant potatoes in lieu of real ones. Also, the leftovers heated up in the microwave the next day still tasted good. My boyfriend has asked me to definitely make this one again.

I made this last night for dinner. I did not use canned green beans, I used frozen. I sauteed the onion with some fresh chopped baby bella mushrooms before adding in the green beans, soup, some fresh ground pepper and about a half cup of milk to thin out the soup just a bit. The mashed potatoes were homemade. My youngest did not like this but both my oldest and I did. Next time, I might try this with fresh vegetables, a homemade mushroom soup base and a cauliflower mash, just to make it a little healthier. I think this would be good with a brown gravy, too (think salisbury steak-ish). GREAT base recipe.
11/17/2011
A savory "pie" of this sort can be made with many added ingredients, more sliced mushrooms, diced carrots, peas or whatever one fancies. The potatoes are finally given a basket weave pattern using the back of a fork. The little ridges created by the fork will brown nicely in the oven and add to the eye-appeal of the dish. Thanks Steff for your variation on a family favorite.
04/20/2009
loved it. i added steamed diced carrots to mine and diced velvetta cheese that i mixed the velvetta into the mashed potatoes untill all melted. carrots went in with the meat.
11/17/2011
I made this tonight, true to the recipe as I always do the first time and it was wonderful. Very easy, and well liked by the entire family, even the picky ones. The meat cooked up nicely and all of the flavors compliment each other well. Creamy and flavorful, a great comfort food in cooler weather. I think this is a great recipe for a quick meal when you don't really feel like cooking but you want something hearty for your family. We served with a simple salad and bread/breadsticks.
11/17/2011
In the midwest we still call it that and we use hamburger. Not to many people I know buy lamb. My mom made it all the time growing up, love it.
11/17/2011
I freeze and use left over roast gravy instead of soup. Sometimes add water to make gravy more liquidy. I fry onion with beef, add parboiled carrots and add peas along with a good splash of worcestershire sauce. I mash the potatoes as normal with butter and a bit of milk and mash an egg into the potatoes so that they are not runny. Need a good two cups of mashed potatoes. Sprinkle cheddar cheeese on top and bake for half an hour at 350.
04/02/2009
This is the exact same recipe I use. It is AWESOME!!!
01/04/2011
I can't believe I've never made a sheherd's pie until last night. This recipe made what I always thought would be a time consuming dish, very quick and very easy. I used frozen green beans instead of canned and I added a bit of worcestershire sauce to the mix as well. Everyone loved it and it is now going on the list of monthly dinners. Thanks!
09/22/2010
Good basic recipe. But bland, bland, bland.
11/17/2011
I'm English, as is my husband, so we tried this out of curiosity since it sounded nothing like real shepherds pie. Despite the fact that it's not shepherd's pie simply because it's made with beef -- it's actually Cottage Pie and Shepherd's Pie is made with lamb -- it was a nice flavor. Cottage pie and shepherd's pie are typically made with Worcestershire Sauce as a base so adding something like oxtail soup or a hearty veggie/beef soup would make more sense to me. Having said that, semantics aside, it was tasty and easy.
11/18/2011
Steff never claimed that this was a traditional Sheperd's Pie. I did cook the ground beef with diced onion and seasoned the beef with salt, pepper and a little garlic powder. My kids don't like green beans so I used a cup of corn. I layered half the ground beef then pototos and repeated. I used about 1/4 of the cheese just to top. Some of the family even topped it off with gravy. Inexpensive and hearty meal. Thanks Steff for sharing with us.
11/17/2011
I season the meat and saute the onion. I use peas and/or peas and carrots only after meat is cooked. Half the soup is all you need and I add cheese to the top of the meat layer before the potatoes and put sour cream and cheese into the potatoes with a pat of butter to give more flavor. After its done, I sometimes broil the top of the potatoes so they look more inviting. I also cook up a package of brown gravy to put over the top if people l ike it.
11/04/2011
I couldn't stop eating this dish - such a wonderful comfort food on a cold Fall evening. I cooked the onion with the meat, added garlic powder, white pepper, and a dash of coriander along with the soup. Also found 1/3 jar of beef gravy in the fridge and added that to the mix. We'll definitely be having this again soon. Thanks Steff - this dish made my family happy
06/18/2011
Loved this! Satisfying, budget-friendly, very tastey. SUGGESTIONS: be generous with the amount of diced onion you use. Add 1/2 bag frozen mixed (diced) veggies. Add rosemary, thyme, oregano, garlic powder & pepper (all to taste) to the beef mix. Stir in or top mashed potatoes with some garlic powder. Can go with or without cheese! (A little extra seasoning & veg makes this go from good to great & only takes an extra 90 seconds of prep!)

I read several of the reviews, and have to say, it's a great starter recipe. "True" Shepards Pie is made with Ground Lamb, Veggies, and Left Over Mashed Potatoes. When we were growing up in post war England, thats what you had!! In today's world ground beef is perfect for the recipe, the whole point is to make a meal from the leftovers, tasty, filling and affordable. It is comfort food, fill me up, make me feel at home. However you spice up the basic recipe - it should be what your family enjoys. Tiny point, if you pull the pie out of the oven 5 minutes before you expect to serve and paint the potatoes with butter, return to the oven, they will brown and crisp the high spots and give you the look that earned the "pie" name.
11/18/2011
It is a very tasty dish. I've been making this dish for 30-some years now and it's a great stand by. In MY version, I salt and pepper the ground beef, add a splash of Worcestershire sauce, the mushroom soup, 1 8oz can of green beans, 1 8oz can of corn, and 1 small can of fried of fried onions. Then just mix it all up together. I add a layer of cheese on top of meat mixture, but that's optional, and a layer of cheese on top of the mashed potatos. And since everything is already cooked, I heat mine through in the microwave for 3-5 minutes (depending on your microwave). Until cheese has melted and is hot all through.
02/03/2011
Wonderful!! Thank you..I will make this again! I added garlic and onion powder to the meat and some corn with the green beans.
09/26/2010
I love sheperd's pie it has always been one of my favorite meals. I cooked 1/2 an onion and a clove of garlic in the frying pan before adding the beef and used some salt, pepper, and oregano with the meat. It came out spectacular!! Thanks for the recipe.
05/14/2009
This is an easy, tasty "base" recipe. But I can rarely resist "tweeking", so here's what I did: As per others; I cooked the (1 chopped vs 1/2) onion with the beef with a few light shakes of salt, pepper & garlic powder. I also often feel free to use "Cream of Anything" soup (what I have handy that seems like it'll taste good). Veggies: Same thing, whatever's handy (I prefer frozen vs. canned). The potatoes: I use those new "Idahoan" brand pouchs. They're quick, use no milk (which I rarely have on hand) and come in a variety of flavors, which is fun. I've increased the potatoes (using 2 pouches), so that I can spread a layer on the bottom first (1 cup & 1/2 more). It's sort of makes a crust & I like it. But not too thick. *Coat bake dish w/ non-stick spray first!! Depending on how deep it is, I've occationally increased the cooking time by 10-15 minutes. Keep an eye on that. (Personally, I am a gravy addict, so I always whip up some brown/onion/homestyle or beef-type gravy to go with.) Looking at other reviews, however, I'm tempted to try using ground turkey in the future: more "tweeking" opportunities! :) Thanks for this recipe- I've had fun with it- making it & eating it!!
09/22/2013
I think this is excellent as is and the beauty of it is you can put whatever vegetables you want in it. It's beyond me WHY someone would start out a review "I gave this four stars because I changed some ingredients" Really? Rate your changes four stars this is fine the way it is!!! Will make again and again! thank you for the great recipe!
01/04/2012
Great recipe! I made a couple modifications to suit our dietary needs. First, I like low-carb so instead of mashed potatoes, I used mock-mashed potatoes made from cauliflower. I found the recipe at About.com http://homecooking.about.com/od/vegetablerecipes/r/blv316.htm Next, my wife was recently diagnosed with allergies to both gluten and soy. I couldn't find any gravies, canned, jarred, powdered or otherwise that didn't have gluten, soy or both. So, I tried sloppy joe mix. It turned out great!
11/16/2011
Easy and delicious recipe! I had leftover mashed potatoes and it took me only a few minutes to put everything together and put it in the oven. Yummy hot from the oven and the leftovers were equally good! I added the onions while cooking the beef and added some spices (thyme, salt, pepper, parsley) to the meat, but no other changes.
06/23/2010
After I browned the beef I added 1 package of taco seasoning mix and 1/2 cup of water and let it cook a few more minutes. Then I added the cream of mushroom. Instead of green beans I added fresh orange and yellow pepper. These changes gave this a southwest twist. Mmmmm
05/01/2011
Wonderful! I added half packet of French onion soup mix to soup and mixed and also. Very easy and works great with leftover mashed potatoes!
11/19/2011
lol you didn't make this recipe up... Its been around long before any of us. Our family likes it better with 1 can cream of mushroom soup and 1 can tomato soup. we also like it with corn it it.
11/18/2011
I love Sheperds Pie! Steff thanks for submitting this. My grandmother is 93 years of age & this is what she calls Shepherds Pie! This is very delicious made following your instructions, no modifications needed. Thank you!
01/12/2010
Good recipe! My husband was very excited to have Shepard's Pie for dinner. This was very good. Might tweak a few things next time - like seasoning the beef a little. Definitely recommend.
11/17/2011
It was yummy!! I prefer beef and that is how I have always made it and yes I called it Shepherd Pie. Good job Steff - thanks for the recipe.
07/25/2010
Another keeper! This recipe was pretty quick and easy. We added carrotts and peas along with the meat and onions and it turned out great. We used grain feed beef that we picked up from our local farmers markets, and it was delish. There's only two of us, so we were able to get 2 meals out of it.
03/16/2012
This was good. The reason for 3 stars is I think it actually needed just a little bit of seasoning. I followed the recipe exactly as given. Next time, I think I will cut down on the onion, add in some ground pepper and a little garlic salt, plus a little more cheese. And on a side note, this is really a cottage pie since it uses ground beef instead of ground lamb. I recommend the recipe, it's really good ... thank you for sharing with us.
08/20/2010
This recipe was great. I did modify it just a little.. I added beef bouillon, garlic, curry powder and steak spice to the ground beef and used canned corn instead of green beans. It was perfect and my husband loved it! Thanks very much for sharing this recipe :)
09/27/2011
Shockingly good for the effort. Of course, it's better if you season your beef with the usual stuff (garlic, onion, etc.).
02/06/2012
This was a yummy choice of the many shepherd pie options out there. The addition of the cream of mushroom soup made me think of green bean casserole. Once I made that connection, I think the addition of the french fried onions would make this an even more standout of a recipe. Try this version and you will not be disappointed!
11/19/2011
This dish is pretty standard and ingredients can be changed or adjusted to suit ones preferance. I finely grate rutabagaa, carrots and chop onions to saute with the beef. For information when the dish is made with beef it is Cottage Pie! Shepherds Pie is made with ground Lamb. The latter I prefer.
01/07/2012
Yummy, but not much different from what I grew up eating. (this is a good thing!) when I was a kid my mom used creamed corn and no other veggies. but I like this, and so did my boyfriend!
05/22/2011
Very tasty, but a little runny. Would use less cream mushroom soup or use more ground beef.
11/18/2011
I thought it was okay, agree with most other reviewers meat needed to be seasoned. I think it was the cream of mushroom soup that left me feeling so so, I guess I prefer the tomato soup version I am used to. We ate it all up anyway.
11/19/2011
Great Recipe... I spiced it up with onion, garlic and hamburger type seasonings...I also added low fat mayo to make it creamier! Super yummy!
12/20/2010
Super and easy to make. Nice variation of Shepherds Pie. My kids loved it. I sauteed the onions with the beef and added garlic as well. Otherwise followed the recipe as provided. Tabasco on my serving was nice.
11/20/2011
Perfect! This has become an overnight hit in my house, and i didnt have to change a thing!
11/19/2009
This is a great meal to make when you're short on time. So easy and delicious. I used instant mashed potatoes which worked great.
05/23/2010
Very good basic recipe, but definitely needs some changes to up it to 5 star. I used a can of mixed vegetables rather than just beans, added 2 cloves of minced garlic, some seasoning salt, and cheese on top of the potatoes. I think a half can of diced tomatoes would be a nice addition as well. Oh, and best of all, I made this in an oven safe skillet, so it was a one-dish meal!!!
11/08/2011
My entire family loved this, there were no leftovers, the only change I made was I added a bag of mixed veggies instead of the green beans. This was so easy, and so delicious!
09/17/2011
This is fabulous if you swap out cream soup and use condensed tomato, thats how my mom makes it it is delish!
05/13/2009
I loved this recipe. It was quick and fast! I added some minced garlic and some red pepper to it. I also used cheese singles and swiss cheese singles.
11/01/2011
Very good recipe. Very quick and easy. I really can't think of anything that I would change other then cooking the onions with the ground beef for preference reasons. Other then that the family enjoyed it. Just good ole' fashion comfort food on a night when there's a chill in the air.
11/22/2011
I was pushed for time, so I used Idahoan Instant Mashed Potatoes, and sauteed frozen chopped onion with the ground beef, instead of waiting to add the fresh onion. I also seasoned the ground beef mixture heavily with garlic salt and black pepper. After I baked it at 350, I kicked the broiler on, topped with lots of grated Parmesean cheese , and ran it in for 7 minutes to brown, and form a "crust" over the top...delish! This is a keeper!
11/17/2011
Delicious! This one's a keeper because it's also quick and easy. I used frozen peas and corn and I added garlic and doubled the mashed potatoes. I also added garlic to the beef. My husband and daughter both loved it as did I!
12/30/2014
My family loved this recipe. So did I because it was simple to make. I followed it exactly as written. It had tons of flavor! To address other reviews stating this recipe is bland, all five of us disagree. Between the soup, cheese, and potatoes it had plenty of salt and flavor. Thanks for a great recipe and a yummy variation on a good old classic that is quick and easy. This one is going in the recipe box.
02/10/2011
Good comfort food…and a good way to use up left over mashed potatoes! The only thing I did differently was cook the onions with the ground beef and add corn with the green beans. I think doubling up on the cheese would be a good idea. I didn't even notice the one cup of cheese. I don't think I would make this if I didn't have the mashed potatoes already made, but it was a simple and good meal.
10/11/2011
this is a great receipe. I did sautee some fresh garlic in with the ground beef. Normally, in this part of the country it is made with English Peas instead of Green Beans! I did it the way the author intended it to be to try it! I placed then in individual casserole dishes, and, topped them with Leftover Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes. (after placing the cheese on top of the beef mixture) I used a Mexican Blend with a touch of Philadelphia. Then, after twenty minutes I took them out of the oven, place a sprinling of cheese on top and returned them to Low Broil just until browned! Then topped them with snipped fresh chives!
11/12/2014
Good! I added some seasoned salt to the ground beef because other reviews said it was bland and I used canned peas instead of green beans. I didn't have enough cheddar cheese on hand so I shredded some smoked Gouda. YUMMMY!!! I think this is a perfect recipe that can be changed up or left alone. Either way, it's good for a busy night when you don't have a lot of time to cook.
11/17/2011
I think Shepard's Pie recipes vary by locale. In the upper mid west we use corn instead of green beans and tomato soup instead of Cream of Mushroom. The outcome is the same. Wonderful, filling, comfort food!
11/18/2011
Not such a fan of the beans. Being British and a traditionalist Shepherds pie should be made with ground or chopped lamb. If you make it with Beef it is Cottage pie.
01/12/2015
Really good dish, just add more seasoning to your liking, I also substituted the beef for chicken, still came out tasty.
11/17/2011
Not to my taste at all and quite bland. Being married to an englishman, he was personally appalled, so won't be making this again and will go back to his recipe :-)
04/28/2009
Very easy & very tast. I made it just as instructed except used peas because I was out of green beans.
11/17/2011
This is very good.
01/26/2011
I used 1.25 lb ground turkey instead of the beef. Also, I sauteed my onion with the meat, which I seasoned with lots of garlic and Ms Dash. I used 6 servings of instant potatoes that I made with fat free 1/2 & 1/2 (yum!) that I spiced up. Also, had a huge can of cream of mushroom that I used part of it in the meat with about a cup of sour cream. the last bit (did not use the whole can) I used on top of my french style green bean & veg-all layer. And lastly, I used an 8 oz block of colby shredded on top. I know it seems like a lot of changes, but I feel like the recipe is very adaptable.
07/13/2010
Very good recipe. I did make a few changes just because I couldn't find the recipes I wanted. I will share what I did but I am sure the recipe is great as is. Put carrots in with the potatoes and mashed them together. Sauteed a whole onion in with hamburger meat after I drained the grease. Added two beef bouillon cubes and a can of corn (drained) with the meat mixture. Instead of putting cheese in the pie, I sprinkled a layer of cheese on top the last 10 minutes of baking.
08/24/2010
This was awesome! The only things I did different was (1) I seasoned the potatoes with raw garlic while they boiled (2) I seasnoned the meat with steak salt. (3) I also sauteed the onions in butter instead of adding them in raw. I'll try it next time with a little red wine in with the meat. This is an easy favorite for taste and easy to prepare!
06/26/2011
The family and I loved it. I used instant mashed potatoes on top and sprinkled with cheese. I also didn't have an onion so I used minced onion. Yummy!
04/26/2011
This is the first time I have made a shepherd's pie and I had a good result. Easy, satisfing comfort food! I did add the onion with the beef so it cooked up before adding the other ingredients. I added a can of green beans and a can of corn, which makes a good combo. I also added a bit of garlic, which I think enhanced the flavor. I agree, it could use a larger portion of mashed potatoes. I cooked up my potatoes fresh, and ended up with about 3 1/2-4 cups of mashed potatoes...just right, in my book. I know this will grace our dining table again and again! Thanks for the recipe!
05/19/2012
Used a whole onion and a few garlic cloves, which I sautéed, then added the cooked meat (used ground turkey). I put a layer of mashed potatoes on the bottom and on top (at least 4 c.) Yum!
01/18/2010
We made this with the recommendations that some of the reviewers made. We did the 1/2 can of mushroom soup with 1/2 cup of sour cream. We also added garlic powder and season salt for seasoning. We did frozen mixed veggies. We also used instant mashed potatoes. It was delicious! Even my 15 year old daughter came back for seconds. :) Thank you for sharing. We will definitely make it again!
01/20/2013
This was very good! A nice, filling comfort food on a cold January night! I substituted cream of onion soup for the cream of mushroom due to personal preference. Also substituted a half bag of frozen mixed veggies (probably could've used more) for the can of green beans. I will make this again with the same substitutions. I did not think this lacked flavor at all. Maybe the cream of onion soup helped to add some flavor??
03/03/2011
It turned out better than I thought. I added the onion to the ground beef while I was still cooking it. I also added a pinch of garlic powder and about 1/4 tsp of ground pepper. I used 2 cans of cream of mushroom soup and a can of whole kernel corn as well. My family loves dairy so we used 1 cup of cheddar and 1 cup of Colby jack cheese. It was delish!!!!!!!!!!!
05/31/2010
I like this recipe a lot. Changes I made were cooking the onion with the meat (and a little garlic), a dash of garlic powder in the potatoes, and I even substituted corn (cause I can't get my crew to eat green beans). I think it is a good base recipe. Thanks!
03/16/2010
I made this with leftover roast beef and it was to die for.
11/19/2011
Nice, easy recipe, but I did make a few changes. Instead of onion, I used a clove of fresh, minced garlic in the browning meat. I omitted the soup and added 1 can of petite diced tomatoes. After simmering for 10 min, I spread this mixture in a dish, smothered it in shredded cheese and then covered the whole thing in 2 packages instant garlic mashed potatoes. My 4 kids ate everything on their plate...what more could you want as a mom?
10/23/2010
It was ok, added extra spices to the meat and used garlic mashed potatoes.
02/02/2011
we use mixed veggies instead
08/01/2010
My husband and I really enjoyed this. (would have given 5 stars if the kiddo's ate it) I followed the recipe other than seasoning and cooking the onions witht he beef. Very good flavor and a hearty meal. That being said my oldest would not touch it and the toddler tried it but did not like it, so maybe not for all kids, but the grown-ups liked it.
11/22/2011
this is a keeper!
12/29/2014
Used cream of mushroom, frozen vegetable mix with corn, green beans and carrots, Tuscan spice mix( fresh and easy brand) and instant mashed potatoes made with milk and butter. Delicious and easy
12/10/2011
I used frozen green beans that I cooked with salt and a little bacon grease. I also added more cheese.
07/30/2010
Great recipe for a start and then added to eat to make this a family favorite. Browned the ground beef with onion and minced garlic. Used 1/2 cream of mushroom soup and 1/2 golden mushroom soup. Also added more variety of frozen veggies. Topped with homemade garlic-buttermilk mashed potatoes, no cheese. Was very delicious.
02/12/2010
I made this last night, and my husband and son really enjoyed it. I didn't have the exact ingredients so I used what I had...instead of green beans I grated up a bunch of carrot, chopped up two small turnips and a red pepper. Instead of cream of mushroom, I had tomato bisque or cheddar cheese. I doubled the recipe and used both. What I like most about it is the versatility - you can use any veggies you want, and your teenage son will never know! A great way to use up leftovers!
11/17/2011
Tasty and fast prep with the canned soup and veg, use fresh greens and sourcream if you can, less salt. All around fast and tasty for most.
12/13/2011
I have never made Shepards Pie, all the other receipes were toooo complicated... Loved this so much! Used leftover mashed potatoes, super easy.
11/15/2014
Great recipe, simple and good tasting.
02/07/2011
Okay pie. Good flavor. I added some green salsa to give more of a kick.
12/22/2010
This was excellent! I did cook the onions with the hamburger and I added seasoning salt and garlic salt. It turned out so good!! Thanks! I will definitely make again and again...
10/21/2010
I served this to 100 people at a church supper. I was asked for the recipe by 10 or 12 people. I did cook the onion with the beef, and I added a can of garden (green) peas. It is extremely good!!!
04/15/2015
We enjoyed this meal, thank you for the recipe. I made it as listed except I didn't have any onion so I substituted a package of Lipton Onion Soup mix instead, just mixed it in while cooking the meat mixture. I added about a half cup of milk to the meat mixture too as it seemed too thick, this extra moisture made the finished product nice too. We especially liked the layer of cheese underneath the potato. I added a half of a brick of cream cheese to the mashed potatoes while preparing them for extra delicious flavor too, and a sprinkle of garlic powder. I spread the homemade mashed potatoes on top and then tufted them with a fork to get a nice appealing look on top as it baked, I broiled it for 2 minutes to brown the potato tufts topping and it looked great!

I only rated this review a 4 due to seasoning missing. I add dill and pepper to the meat after browing. And I put a light coating of egg on the potatoes to give it a slight crust and golden color. I have also put pats of butter ont he potatoes before baking. This is one of my favorite family dishes.

This is such a quick and easy recipe, and a great way to use leftover potatoes. The cream of mushroom soup gives it great consistency - I used peas and carrots instead of green bears, and i season with garlic powder, plus salt & pepper. Delicious!

This is a great comfort food and so easy. I did change a few ingredients. I added 1 cup frozen peas, 1 can niblets corn, i usually don't use green beans but since I had some leftover I threw them in also. Added a salad and fresh baked bread=one delicious easy dinner.
